Administration Announces Government Employee Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official procedure for letting employees go.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to the public across the country,” said a national union president, representing the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, labor groups sought a court injunction to prevent the government from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Moreover, a federal judge directed the administration to disclose details on termination strategies, impacted departments, and whether any federal employees had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

A report contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated prior to the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

These terminations took place on the very day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” the advocate stated. The flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
